Bankura, Aug. 9: A Bankura youth allegedly raped a college student after calling her over to his home on the pretext of giving her notes.

Saheb Mondal, 22, is a distant relative of the girl, a first-year Sanskrit student, police said. “Both hail from the same village in Ranibandh. The youth had approached the girl’s family a few days ago with a proposal to marry her,” an officer said.

The police said Saheb, who completed his BA in Sanskrit last year and was pursuing a diploma course, had called up the 20-year-old girl on her cellphone on Tuesday and asked her to come over to his rented room in Bankura town to pick up some notes.

“According to the complaint lodged by the girl’s father, the youth locked the room and raped her,” the officer said.

The girl narrated the incident to her father, a constable with Bankura police, who lodged a complaint with Sadar police station.

“We arrested the youth from his home yesterday,” the officer added.

Saheb was remanded in 14 days’ judicial custody by a Bankura court today, district police chief Mukesh Kumar said.

“Medical tests have been conducted on both the youth and the girl,” Kumar added. He said the reports would be placed in court during the next hearing.
