ASI axed for ‘assault’

Balurghat, Sept 27: An assistant sub-inspector of Balurghat police station was suspended today after a youth who was allegedly beaten up at the police station yesterday died in hospital.

Raju Das, 24, was arrested on Thursday for loitering around a bus stand “suspiciously”. He was produced in the court on Friday and granted bail. When Raju went to the police station to collect Rs 50, 000 and a cellphone that he had deposited, the officials allegedly refused to return them and beat him up. He was admitted to the district hospital where he died yesterday. His father later lodged an FIR against ASI Prashanta Barman accusing him of “inhuman torture” that killed Raju. Following the complaint, the ASI was suspended. District police chief Chirantan Nag said: “If found guilty, departmental proceedings would be initiated against him.”


Five arrested

Malda: A Congress gram panchayat member and four others were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly assaulting three policemen at Englishbazar police station. Congress leader Jaimuddin Sheikh, and around 30 others, allegedly attacked constable Biswanath Chakrabarty and tore his uniform and thrashed two other policemen who tried to save him. The police said five among the attackers had been picked up on Friday from illegal hooch dens and some of the people had also threatened Chakrabarty. The five arrested men have been remanded in judicial custody for 15 days.


Train timing

Siliguri: The 12501 Down Guwahati–New Delhi Poorvattar Sampark Kranti Express that was scheduled to leave Guwahati at 6am on Wednesday will leave the station at 3.30pm the same day, Northeast Frontier Railway officials said on Tuesday.


Garden shut

Alipurduar: Dalmore Tea Estate near Birpara has declared suspension of work from Tuesday after the management issued a notice. Amiyo Das, the assistant labour commissioner of Birpara, said the notice was issued because of “indiscipline among a section of workers”. He said a tripartite meeting will be convened to discuss the issue.
