Malda, Oct. 25: The body of a Class IX student was found hanging in the hostel of a madarsa near Kaliachak this morning.
While the headmaster of Aman Renaissance Mission High Madarsa at Shahbazpur said Habibur Rehman had hanged himself, his family members alleged that he had been throttled to death and hanged. Police said a student in the hostel had alleged that Habibur had stolen Rs 240 from him on Saturday. When Habibur confessed to the theft next day, some students asked the headmaster to oust him from the hostel. “He did not steal the money. He had admitted committed the crime because the madarsa authorities had threatened to expel him if he did not do so. We suspect he was throttled to death by a student in the hostel,” said Habibur’s brother.
Raiganj: A man stabbed his wife and father-in-law to death at Sashan near Hemtabad on Tuesday. Police said Abdul Rezzaq had married a woman in Calcutta without the knowledge of his first wife Rubina Khatoon. When Rubina and her family came to know about the second marriage, they asked for a divorce. Off late, Rezzaq had been staying with Rubina and her father. But on Tuesday he suddenly stabbed both of them to death. The police are looking for Rezzaq.
Siliguri: The Sharad Samman awards for best Durga Puja organisers, was handed over to the winners at a programme on Burdwan Road on Tuesday. While Subrata Sangha and Renaissance Club got the awards in the big and small-budget puja categories, Millanpally Sarbojanin Durga Puja Committee received a special award. Chalantika was awarded the best puja organised by women.
Gangtok: A girl child was born to former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia and his wife here on Tuesday. “Both the mother and the baby are in good health. The child has been named Samara Dechen Bhutia,” said a friend of Bhaichung. The couple already have a daughter and a son.
