Ex-cop acquitted of murder

Siliguri, Sept. 24: The additional session judge of Fast Track Third Court, Gour Sunder Banerjee, today acquitted Mihir Roy, a retired assistant sub-inspector of police, of a murder charge.

Roy who was posted at the Matigara police station had gone to Saigram to investigate a land dispute. Asok Pandit (57), a shop-owner and resident of Saigram, accompanied Roy since he knew the location. The duo were walking on railway tracks when a train ran over Pandit on June 30, 1995. Pulak lodged a complaint on January 17, 1997, accusing Roy of shoving his father into the tracks and killing him, said Kakali Bose, Roy’s lawyer.


Students held

Siliguri: Three college students from Darjeeling were arrested on Wednesday night from a mobile shop in Shivmandir near here for disturbing the peace of the area. The students had walked into the shop around 9.30pm and had a heated exchange with a woman shop attendant. Local people called the police.


Road race

Siliguri: Olympian Susmita Singha Roy will inaugurate a 15km- road race and 4km-Fraternity Run, organised by Bagha Jatin Athletics Club, on September 29. The winner of the 15km run will get Rs 15,000, sponsored by ABP Pvt Ltd, and a trophy.


Varsity team

Islampur: A four-member team from Gourbanga University visited Islampur College and met members of the governing body and students’ union. The students have been demonstrating here for the past three days, demanding that the college should remain affiliated to North Bengal University, which is much closer compared to the Malda-based new varsity.


Border haul

Balurghat: Tablets and packets of bandaids worth over Rs 5.75 lakh were seized from Dakshinpara area along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Hili on Tuesday night. BSF officials said four youths were carrying the tablets to Bangladesh. When they were chased, they crossed over to the other side of the border, leaving the consignments behind.
