Cook shot dead

Darjeeling, June 16: Jaswant Singh, a state armed police personnel, accidentally shot his cook at Lodhma police station in Bijanbari block last evening.

Singh was reportedly cleaning his rifle when it accidentally went off, hitting the cook Kumar Chhetri (23) in his abdomen.

The cook from Sombarey in Sikkim was taken to the Bijanbari hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Additional superintendent of police, Darjeeilng, C.S. Lepcha said: ?It was an accident and the offence is bailable.?


Ransacked

Siliguri: The CPM staged a demonstration and ransacked the office of the Congress-ruled Matigara gram panchayat-II on Thursday. CPM supporters, led by Aurobindo Ghosh and Bhawendra Acharya, gathered at the office of panchayat pradhan Priyanka Biswas to submit a memorandum, to protest against alleged malpractices. Incidentally, she was absent and Rajkumar Thapa, the deputy pradhan, came under fire from the protesters. Jibitesh Sarkar, the senior district CPM leader and state secretariat member, denied the involvement of CPM supporters in the incident.


Bomb found

Siliguri: A ?bomb? ? a soft drink can wrapped in red insulation tape with two wires connected to a battery ? found on the landing of a staircase to the first-floor of the UTI Bank here created panic on Thursday afternoon. Police were called in and, within 45 minutes of its discovery, the ?device? was defused with no harm done. Around 2 pm a young man rushed into the bank on Sevoke Road near Panitanki More, shouting that there was a bomb on the staircase. Senior bank staff took control of the situation and immediately contacted the police.


Silver shop

Siliguri: Unique silver utility and decorative articles were made available perhaps for the first time to residents of the town on Thursday with the opening of Silverline, a new showroom at Bidhan Market. The venture is a sister concern of Bidhan Jewellery Works and Bidhan Diamonds.
