Siliguri, Oct. 15: The Siliguri Municipal Corporation will hand over a cheque of Rs 9 lakh to Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Friday for the flood-affected people of the state.
Mayor Bikash Ghosh said the money was collected in a fund raising programme organised at an amusement park here in the presence of former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly on September 13. Ghosh will leave for Patna tomorrow.
Islampur: Burglars took away ornaments worth Rs 10,000 from the Kacha Kali temple in Chopra on Tuesday night, police said. The thieves had broken open the main door of the temple. An investigation has begun.
Jalpaiguri: Kotwali Police on Wednesday recovered gold ornaments worth Rs 1 lakh from Bhagat Singh Colony and arrested three persons. The ornaments, the police said, were stolen from Krishna Surekha’s house at Netajipara on the night of Saptami.
Jalpaiguri: District police gave away awards to Durga Puja organisers of the town on Wednesday. Patkata Cultural Club, Patkata Agrani Sangha and Natunpara (RG Party) Puja Committees were given the first, second and third prizes respectively at a programme held at the zilla parishad auditorium. Consolation prizes were also given to three clubs.
Balurghat: A person was arrested in Hili’s North Jamalpur on Wednesday for possessing fake Indian currency notes with face value of Rs 61,500. Acting on a tip-off, Monglu Mandal was picked up from the Panjul area in Hili when he was roaming about. He was found to be carrying fake notes with face value of Rs 50,000. The police later raided his house and seized counterfeit notes with face value of Rs 11,500. The notes have come from Bangladesh, the police said.
