Darjeeling, April 14: The district magistrate of Darjeeling, Surendra Gupta, said today that a meeting to form a committee that would welcome the Queen’s Baton here for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games had been postponed from April 16 to April 21.
Prominent sports personalities from the region as well as sports organisations had been invited to the meeting. Gupta said the postponement was because of administrative reasons. The Queen’s Baton is scheduled to arrive in Darjeeling in July.
Balurghat: Shyamali Basak, a 75-year-old widow, lodged a complaint with Balurghat police on Wednesday, accusing her elder son Shyamal, a CRPF jawan, of assaulting her and trying to drive her out of the house.
Siliguri: Members of the Darjeeling District Para Teachers’ Association submitted a memorandum to state urban development minister Asok Bhattacharya here on Wednesday, demanding that their jobs be made permanent and they be allowed to go on leave with pay. Bhattacharya told the teachers that he would take up the matter with the state school education minister.
