Clash over orchard

Malda, May 12: Police fired 10 rounds to disperse two groups of people fighting over the possession of a 42-bigha mango orchard at Khaschandapur in Kaliachak police station area this morning.

Trouble began when Lalit Chowdhury and his men came to take possession of the orchard and Subal Das resisted his efforts.

In the ensuing clash, firearms were freely used and two persons, Pola Ghosh and Ratan Ghosh, sustained bullet injuries. Both of them have been admitted to Malda district hospital. No one was arrested till late evening.


Agitation

Kurseong: The Darjeeling Chai Kaman Majdoor Union on Thursday started its third-phase of agitation at Ringtong tea estate demanding that the government cancel the lease if the owner of the estate does not begin operations immediately .The Citu-controlled union brought work to a standstill. A fire had razed the Ringtong tea garden in 1986 and a committee formed by labourers, has been running the garden ever since.


Arrest

Siliguri: The forest department arrested Deju Barman and Ajit Kerketta from Khokhlong forest area near Laltong on Wednesday night for killing a deer and trying to sell its meat. Patrolling forest guards came upon the two men, with around 3 kg of deer meat in packets.


Blood camps

Siliguri: The Art of Living will organise blood donation camps at two venues here on Friday to celebrate the 49th birthday of its founder, Sri Sri Ravishankar. The camps will be held at City Garden on Sevoke Road and Sankari Bhawan in Baghajatin Park from 10 am onwards. The collected blood will be donated to Siliguri Sadar Hospital, North Bengal Medical College and Hospital and Terai Lions Blood Bank.


Accident

Islampur: Fifteen persons were injured when a Siliguri-bound Tata Sumo hit a truck head on at Ramganj on NH-31 on Thursday afternoon. The drivers of both the vehicles are among the injured.
