Siliguri, Oct. 10: A weigh-bridge has been set up on NH 55 at Dagapur today. The bridge was constructed on Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority land. The weighbridge was a longstanding demand of the people as well as environmentalists to curb the overloading of vehicles.
Lauding the construction of the weighbridge, Regional Transport Officer, Darjeeling, P.W. Dukpa said his department had also fixed the maximum load for every truck.
Darjeeling MP S.P. Lepcha inaugurated the weighbridge today.
Siliguri: The postal department will open a stationery store at Siliguri head post office. The store will stock all stationery related to post office work. “At this counter, stationery like pens, paper, greeting cards, erasers, scissors, adhesive and souvenirs will be available. We will also make Darjeeling tea available to the customers from the counter,” said John Samuel, post-master general of north Bengal and Sikkim.
Siliguri: Sukumar Das of Chayanpara under Bhaktinagar thana hanged himself in his house. “Das was suffering from mental agony for a long time, which must be why he committed suicide,” police sources said. The body has been sent for postmortem.
Gangtok: Hundred-and- sixty-seven students will graduate at the 3rd convocation of the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology (SMIT), Majitar under Sikkim Manipal University on Saturday. Eighty-two of them have attained first class with distinction while 71 others attained first class. Fourteen have secured second division. For the first time, six Sikkimese students have also graduated, becoming the first local batch of the SMIT.
Balurghat: Phensidyl cough syrup worth over Rs 1 lakh was seized by the police on Thursday while being smuggled out to Bangladesh. The police arrested four persons, including a woman, in this connection. A Maruti car in which the consignment of 14 boxes of syrup was being smuggled has also been detained.
