Coach killed in car crash

Gangtok, Aug. 10: The chief coach of the Sikkim table tennis team, Thupden Kunga Bhutia, was killed when the Maruti Gypsy he was travelling in skidded off the road and plunged into the Rangit river at Rolu yesterday.

The state archery coach, Jigme Lepcha and, a senior football coach, Thupten Rapgyal, were also in the vehicle and admitted to the Central Referral Hospital at 5th Mile here with serious injuries. Both have been declared out of danger by the doctors.


Body found

Siliguri: Pradhannagar police recovered a body from beside Hill Cart Road near the Mahananda Bridge here on Sunday morning. The deceased has been identified as Bhabhor Kanubhai (30), a BSF jawan posted at Raninagar in Jalpaiguri, from some documents found on the body.


Kid kidnap bid

Raiganj: Police arrested Bharati Debnath for allegedly trying to take away her grandson, who was being treated at the Kalaiganj block hospital, on Sunday morning. According to police, the woman’s attempt failed when the child’s mother got up and raised the alarm.


Fakes held

Malda: The Border Security Force on Sunday handed over to police five youths who had engaged impostors to sit for their written tests during a recruitment drive at the Baishnabnagar camp in Malda district.


Lok Adalat

Siliguri: Darjeeling District Legal Service Committee will organise a Lok Adalat at the Siliguri Court on August 17 in accordance with a directive of the State Legal Services Authority. The special court will settle various disputes pending before different courts on the spot. Litigants have been asked by the chairman of the sub-divisional legal services committee to come forward with their cases.


Folk council

Cooch Behar: The Bengal minister for backward classes development, Jogesh Barman, inaugurated the North Bengal Folk Culture Council on Sunday at a function at the department’s office here.
