Jalpaiguri, June 10: Forty-eight KLO militants, all inmates of Jalpaiguri Central Jail, have embarked on a 78-hour hunger strike from today.
The militants had declared on Wednesday that they would resort to hunger strike to protest against the alleged indifference of the district administration. They have also refused to talk to the media.
Alipurduar: Two persons, including a child, have died of diarrhoea, in the last 48 hours. Three others have been admitted to Birpara State General Hospital. The incident took place at the Tulshipara tea garden in the Birpara police station area of Alipurduar subdivision.
Siliguri: Anandaloke Hospital and Neurosciences Centre has been organising a free surgical camp for cleft palate patients on its premises since June 6. A surgical team from Chennai-based Sri Rama Chandra Medical College and Research Institute is operating on 16 to 18 patients daily.
Islampur: BSF personnel at the Dudhghar border outpost, Goalpukhar, killed a Bangladeshi rustler, Zahid Alam, and recovered two cattle from him on Thursday. When a gang, which was trying to cross over to Bangladesh with cattle, was asked to stop, they attacked the BSF personnel, who in turn fired at them.
Siliguri: In a bid to popularise the DHR Toy Train, Northeast Frontier Railway will hand over special certificates to foreign tourists who charter the train or avail of the ride from Darjeeling to Ghoom.
Raiganj: Sundari Khatun (10), who had been reported missing since Thursday, was found buried at her house in Magnavita in the Karandighi police station area. She was killed allegedly by her father, Samsul Haque.
