Siliguri, July 4: Police arrested eight persons and seized six bombs and two swords from them on last night.
Circle inspector Prosanta Chanda said: “We suspect that the group was planning to launch an operation somewhere near Khalpara or Burdwan Road. All of them have criminal records.” Seven of those arrested are residents of Siliguri.
Siliguri: Bus services will not be affected in the town during the 24-hour state-wide strike called by various unions on Monday as the Siliguri Minibus Syndicate is not supporting it, a press release has said.
Siliguri: The body of a middle-aged, unidentified man was found near the New Jalpaiguri police outpost on Saturday. Residents of the area spotted the body and informed the police. The body, which bore external injury marks, was sent for postmortem. Police are trying to establish the identity of the man.
Siliguri: An eight-year-old girl died after she was bitten by a snake at Thikanikata, on the outskirts of the town, on Saturday. Her relatives said negligence on the part of North Bengal Medical College and Hospital led to the girl’s death.
Siliguri: Police arrested Pawan Sahani of Begusarai from Santoshinagar on Sunday and seized a pistol and some live cartridges from him.
Jalpaiguri: Singer Srikumar Chattopadhyay and his son Rishikumar inaugurated a cassette, titled Amar Sonar Jalpaiguri , here on Sunday. The cassette has eight songs sung by Olivia Pal, Jhuma Bhattacharya, Arko Mahalanobish and Manasi Dhar, all residents of Jalpaiguri district.
Jalpaiguri: An exhibition of paintings by assistant provident fund commissioner of Jalpaiguri Rituraj Medhi was inaugurated on Saturday. Twenty-four paintings in oil and water have been displayed at the show. A cassette of his songs,titled Mayabini Dooars, was released last year.
