Calcutta, Dec. 8: Bangladesh will have its biggest Victory Day celebration in Calcutta between December 15 and 19.

The festivities assume a special significance as Sheikh Hasina, the country's Prime Minister, will be in India during that time.

Victory Day, known as Bijoy Divas in Bengali, is the most important day in the roster of events in Bangladesh and is celebrated with much fanfare to commemorate the victory over Pakistani forces in the Liberation War of 1971.

On December 16, 1971, Lieutenant General A.A.K. Niazi of Pakistan surrendered to Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora of India, marking the end of war and the creation of Bangladesh.

The Sheikh Hasina government has always credited India for its help in the Liberation War. Hasina is scheduled to reach Delhi on December 17 in her first bilateral visit to India after returning to power in January 2014. Several security and trade-related matters are likely to be taken up during her two-day stay in the national capital.

The Bangladesh side wants to seal a deal with India on the sharing of Teesta water during Hasina's visit. But chances are slim as Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee is opposed to a sharing arrangement that goes against Bengal's interest.

Bangladesh deputy high commissioner Zokey Ahad, however, complimented Mamata. "We used to hold a programme at the deputy high commission on Victory Day in the past... Last year, we held it in Netaji Indoor Stadium following the Bengal chief minister's encouragement... the response was phenomenal. We want to put up a bigger show this time. And the best thing is she will be the chief guest at the inauguration."
