Calcutta, Jan. 29: Bibhabati Ghosh, widow of veteran Congress leader and freedom fighter Atulya Ghosh, died here this morning after protracted illness. She was 96.

Bibhabati is survived by son Asit. Grandson Amitava said she was suffering from various ailments owing to old age and had to be admitted to a city nursing home on Friday. Discharged from the clinic yesterday, she passed away at Asit’s Salt Lake home.

Bibhabati was associated with the Sarada Mission and several welfare organisations. She set up schools and an orphanage for girls. She sustained her family selling khadi when Atulya Ghosh was arrested during the freedom movement. Bibhabati provided shelter to Congress workers at her north Calcutta home during the “Quit India” movement.
