Burdwan, Feb. 5: A young army doctor posted in Burdwan’s Panagarh died when her car veered off NH2 after a tyre-burst and hit a tree this evening.
Major Moina Shekhri’s husband Rohit Srivastava, 37, who was driving the Maruti Swift, suffered cuts and bruises while the couple’s six-year-old son escaped unhurt.
Police said the car veered off the road at Burdwan’s Ajhapur around 6.30pm after the front-left tyre burst. Moina, 30, who was sitting in the front-left seat, suffered a head injury.
The family was going to the army base at Panagarh, from Calcutta. The accident site is about 100km from the army base, district police chief S.M.H. Mirza said.
“Residents pulled the trio out of the car and took them to a nearby nursing home. Moina died soon after admission. Rohit is receiving treatment at the nursing home,” he added.
The officer in charge of Jamalpur police station, Sanat Das, said: “The couple’s colleagues have come to the nursing home from Panagarh. They will take Rohit to the hospital at the Panagarh base.”
