Chief minister Mamata Banerjee is likely to name the lion and the lioness which reached the Bengal Safari Park near here from Tripura on February 12.

Sources in the state forest department said they would send a proposal to the chief minister’s office, requesting Mamata to name the two animals that reached the safari park.

As a part of the animal exchange programme, the lions came here from the Sepahijala Zoological Park in Tripura, along with a few other animals.

“A proposal will be sent to the chief minister’s office through our senior officers so that the chief minister names the lion and the lioness. We have not given any name to the new entrants so far,” said a source in the park.

The seven-year-old lion and the six-year-old lioness are in quarantine now and will be released into the enclosure for public display after a month. Forest department officers and vets are keeping a close watch over the health and the food of the animals.

At the park, the authorities have readied an open enclosure spread over 20 hectares for the lions.
