Santiniketan: About a dozen students staying at the Visva-Bharati hostel where a Class XII girl was found hanging in her room on Thursday left for their homes on Friday.

The girls said it was difficult for them to stay in the same floor of the hostel and concentrate on studies after the alleged suicide of their classmate, Rini Ghosh. Patha Bhavana, where Rini studied, remained closed on Friday and a condolence meeting was held.

Police have questioned some of Rini's roommates to find out about the events leading to the girl's death.

Patha Bhavana officials said the students who wanted to leave the hostel temporarily had been allowed to do so, given the state of their mind.

"It is quite natural for the students to feel uncomfortable and stay in the same floor of the hostel as they saw the body of the girl. The students told us about their problem and we allowed them to go home temporarily," said Bodhirupa Sinha, the principal of Patha Bhavana.

"The students couldn't sleep last night because they had grown up with the girl who died. So, it is very disturbing for them to stay in the same floor of the hostel building," said Kishore Bhattacharya, a teacher of Patha Bhavana.

Visva-Bharati has set up a three member committee to probe the death.
