Cooch Behar, May 30: A 50-year-old man was hacked to death by the husband of a woman he had allegedly been having an affair with.

Gane Mian of Deocharai in Toofanganj had an affair with 23-year-old Abiran, the wife of his neighbour Sukur Ali, for some time. When Ali returned home late last night and found Gane with Abiran in an “objectionable” position, he became furious and murdered him, police said.

Ali and Abiran fled the area after the murder. A bloodstained chopper and a spear have been seized from their house, which has also been sealed, the police added.

Gane’s wife Amina has lodged an FIR against the couple.

According to the police, the affair between Gane and a woman less than half of his age had become a source of gossip in the area. Several salishi meetings were held over the issue. But resolutions at the meetings hardly had any impact over the duo.

Residents of the area said last night Gane’s wife Amina and other members of his family had gone to a relative’s house in a neighbouring village. Gane did not miss the opportunity and went to Abiran. Ali had appeared on the scene and caught them red-handed. He brought out a chopper and hit Gane repeatedly. He then took a spear and pierced it through Gane’s body to ensure his death.

Abiran’s cry for help attracted neighbours. “We found Gane lying in a pool of blood and took him to hospital where he was declared brought dead,” said Aajibar Mian, a villager.

Cooch Behar district police chief Anil Kumar said a murder case had been started against Ali and Abiran.
