June 20: A 65-year-old man was found dead in his Golpark flat this morning.
An initial probe found no signs of foul play, an officer of the homicide department in Lalbazar said.
"Probir Das, who was partially paralysed, fell in his bedroom and suffered a head injury. His walking stick was lying beside him. He seems to have died after midnight," the officer said.
"We are waiting for the post-mortem report but foul play can be ruled out. There were no signs of struggle in the room. The cupboards were locked and the room was not ransacked."
Das used to live with wife Munmun, 62, in their rented apartment on the ground floor of a three-storeyed house at Ballygunge Terrace. The couple's daughter lives in Mumbai.
"Das was alone in the flat in the company of their Labrador, April, as his wife was in Bangalore on a business trip. She runs a business of selling saris," an officer said.
Around 11am, a domestic help had come and pressed the doorbell multiple times. The help alerted the landlord, Gopal Dasgupta, after waiting in vain for several minutes for someone to open the door.
"The landlord opened the apartment with a spare key and found Das lying on the bedroom floor soaked in blood. There was a deep injury on the left side of his head. He lost a lot of blood," the officer said.
Das had been partially paralysed since suffering a cerebral stroke in 2013, cousin Bonnie Seal said.
"He could cover very short distances with the help of a stick. He could go to the bathroom on his own but had trouble moving," she said.
Das used to run a business, which he had to shut it down after taking ill, said Bonnie.
A 67-year-old woman was found dead in a rented apartment at Netaji Nagar near Tollygunge on Saturday morning. A grilled window in the rear portion of the house was found broken and the apartment was ransacked.
Sleuths suspect Gauri Sen, a retired official of the North Bengal State Transport Corporation, was strangulated.
