Three US military aircraft deporting 332 Indians who had entered the country illegally landed in Amritsar on February 5, 15 and 16.

The deportees were handcuffed and chained.Those deported claim Sikhs were forced to take off their turbans. The embarrassment highlighted the dreams and aspirations of thousands of Indians who migrate to western countries often spending lakhs and taking the treacherous ‘Dunki’ route.

The Donkey or ‘Dunki’ route refers to the donkey-like long walks that Indian immigrants take to illegally enter the US or other European countries, mostly in search of jobs, prosperity, higher standards of living. A record 96,917 Indians were caught in 2023 trying to cross into the US. We break down these illegal and risky routes for you.
