Apple has announced several new features for Logic Pro, the digital audio workstation for Mac and iPad, including an improved stem splitter that’s able to separate guitar and piano tracks from existing recordings, new sound packs and even a method to rescue a track when you forget to save it.

Every musician’s nightmare involves playing an incredible track and forgetting to record it. Flashback Capture is an intelligent system that continuously monitors your performance and allows you to recover MIDI and audio performances even after the nightmare. The feature also works for looped sections, saving a separate take on each pass.

Apple said in a note: “By enabling Cycle mode, musicians can improvise multiple takes, and Flashback Capture will automatically organise each pass into a take folder.”

The company said it has improved the quality of audio extracted by Stem Splitter, a feature that was introduced last year to split instruments from a recording.

Stem Splitter has also expanded its capabilities to handle guitar and piano stems alongside its existing functionality, which means producers can isolate these key instruments from mixed tracks.

“Producers can easily select common stem variations, such as a capella, instrumental, or instrumental with vocals, using presets. Additionally, a new submix feature makes it easy for users to export just the parts of audio they want — for example, removing vocals to create an instrumental track, or pulling out the drums and bass for a custom remix,” said the company.

The update comes packed with new sonic content at the heart of which is Dancefloor Rush, a drum-and-bass sound pack featuring over 400 dynamic loops, punchy drum kits and a custom Live Loops grid.

There are also two new sound packs for Logic Pro for Mac: Magnetic Imperfections and Tosin Abasi. “Magnetic Imperfections brings an original texture that captures the raw, unpolished essence of analogue tape, while the Tosin Abasi sound pack showcases progressive metal guitar with boutique amps, unique effects, distinctive picking techniques, and the artist’s signature riffs,” said Apple.

Finally, Learn MIDI on iPad offers a new way to assign functionality to your favourite MIDI controls. The feature makes it easy to assign physical knobs, faders and buttons from MIDI controllers to any “automateable parameter” within Logic Pro.

Logic Pro for Mac 11.2 is available as a free update for existing users and for $199.99 (US) for new users on the Mac App Store. Stem Splitter requires iPad or Mac with M1 chip or later. Logic Pro for iPad 2.2 is available as a free update for existing users, and available on the App Store for $4.99 (US) per month or $49 (US) per year, with a one-month free trial for new users. Logic Pro for iPad requires iPadOS 18.4 or later.
