Based on a novella by Piyush Jha, the upcoming thriller Iskaboner Bibi is expected to be a tense and fast-paced crime thriller that explores the vulnerability and fighting spirit of its women protagonists. The trailer of the film has revealed that it will tell the tale of three ordinary women, who fight to survive after they find themselves trapped by circumstances in situations beyond their control.
A thriller full of mystery and suspense, Iskaboner Bibi promises an intriguing storyline packed with drama, action, emotion and surprise. The trailer suggests a simultaneous progression of the story’s multiple plot points and an exciting narrative style, with a tightly-knit plot design calculated to engage the attention of the audience and provide an intense and riveting viewing experience. Capturing critical moments of the film’s action, cleverly edited to heighten suspense, the trailer conceals more than it reveals, successfully stoking the viewer’s imagination and effectively building anticipation for the film.
It is evident from the trailer that an atmosphere of intrigue and conspiracy will be sustained throughout Iskaboner Bibi. At the centre of its story is the character of Tulika Roy (Arunima Ghosh), who is alleged to be the mastermind of a trio of woman kidnappers. She, along with two other women (played by Trina Saha and Poulomi Das), who are considered to be her accomplices, become victims of a vicious trap that forces them to engage in crime. The unfolding of the plot is thus expected to revolve around their struggle to escape and prove their innocence, and culminate in the unveiling of the identity of the real culprits of the bigger conspiracy, who operated a nexus from behind the scenes and cornered and coerced the women into committing their crimes.
A woman-centric narrative, Iskaboner Bibi will offer insightful studies on the minds of its women characters and in the way they respond to unexpected adversities, threats and challenges. Focusing on themes of crime, corruption, survival, resilience and mental health, the action of the story set in contemporary Calcutta, makes the modern metropolis with its brightly-lit landmarks and pockets of filth and stench become an integral part of the narrative. Painted in its familiar aspects, the city acts as a character anchoring the action, either as an ally to the dangerous deception the women are subject to, or as a guide enabling the women to escape through its unknown alleys and by-lanes. The tense, rhythmic yet brooding background score by Bickram Ghosh enhances the dark and dramatic atmosphere of the film while underscoring its themes of determination, fierce pushback and courage.
Also glimpsed in the trailer are Chandan Sen in the role of a doctor, Arjun Chakrabarty as CID officer Rajat Hajra and Gourab Chatterjee as police inspector Yusuf Khan, who are expected to play pivotal roles in this film with an impressive ensemble cast. Directed by Arindam Sil, Iskaboner Bibi, which adds to his growing list of modern thriller narratives, is awaiting release in theatres.
