Daribhit is not celebrating Durga Puja this year as the North Dinajpur hamlet is yet to recover from a clash that claimed two lives on September 20.

But the two victims, Rajesh Sarkar and Tapash Burman, are “visible” at Ukilpara here. The North Dinajpur district BJP has put up a stall at Ukilpara with the photos of the duo to “remind” the residents about the violence.

During puja days, political parties set up stalls on prominent roads of towns and cities. From there, the parties sell books and magazines and provide drinking water and seats to pandal hoppers.

“We have put up the photos of Rajesh and Tapash to remind people of the district about the incident. Their village is still in mourning and there is no Durga Puja celebration in Daribhit this year. As people indulge in festivities, they should recall the loss that families of the two youths suffered and stand in support of their demand for a CBI investigation into the violence,” said Shankar Chakraborty, the North Dinajpur district BJP president.

Both Rajesh and Tapash were hit by bullets in a clash between police and the local people and later succumbed to their injuries. However, the police denied that they had fired live bullets.

According to BJP sources, the party would renew the movement for the CBI probe after the festive season.

“Our party will not let the issue die down and will renew the movement. After the festival, a number of central leaders, including our party president Amit Shah, will visit the district,” Chakraborty said.
