Left Front and Congress leaders organised a rally in Calcutta on Monday to protest the rising fuel prices.
While the Calcutta rally had notables such as Left Front chairman Biman Bose, MLA Sujan Chakraborty from the CPM and state president Somen Mitra and MP Pradip Bhattacharya from the Congress, similar protests were held at Hooghly, Bankura, Purulia, East Burdwan and Birbhum.
The joint rallies were a bid to project an alliance between the two political forces in the run-up to the 2021 Bengal Assembly polls.
According to the Congress and the CPM insiders, these protests would help both parties establish themselves as an alternative to the Trinamul Congress and the BJP.
