A team of officers from the fire brigade inspected The 42 on Sunday afternoon, a day after a safety net over the Chowringhee highrise under construction had caught fire.

The officers spent an hour at the site and talked to the authorities constructing the 64-storey building.

“We asked them to install fire extinguishers, apart from water supply lines, on all floors. Since we can only reach up to the 21st storey with the help of a skylift, we asked the authorities to install fire-safety measures,” an officer of the fire and the emergency services department said.

Sparks from a wielding job on the 53rd floor of the tower triggered the fire that spread down the nylon safety net.

“We will prepare a report on the building’s fire-safety measures. The authorities constructing the building have been asked to give details of the safety measures they are going to install. We will analyse the plan,” the officer said.
