The CBI on Wednesday placed in the Supreme Court a sealed report containing three documents which it claimed proved alleged involvement of former Calcutta police commissioner Rajeev Kumar in tampering with evidence in the Saradha and other chit fund scams.

The agency submitted the report for seeking custodial interrogation of Kumar. The court has felt that if the plea is considered, Kumar will face severe consequences.

“If a public official is arrested that may lead to suspension of the officer. It has severe consequences for the officers. Many countries do not allow custodial interrogation,” a bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna told solicitor general Tushar Mehta.

In response, Mehta said: “There is evidence of destruction of evidence, shielding the high and mighty, tampering with evidence. If there are consequences, so be it.”

The arguments will resume on Thursday.
