Howrah bridge: A motorcyclist was killed in a head-on collision with a CRPF vehicle on Howrah bridge on Monday night while another on BT Road when his bike rammed into a vehicle.

Around 10.45pm, Sourav Basu Mallick, 36, collided with the CRPF vehicle between pillars 37 and 38, triggering a traffic disruption, police said.

Vehicles were stranded for about 30 minutes and people had to walk on the bridge to reach Howrah station.

"Preliminary investigations revealed the CRPF vehicle had strayed from the city-bound flank and hit the motorcycle that headed towards Howrah," the officer said.

Basu Mallick, 36, was declared dead at the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. He had a helmet at the time of the accident, the police said.

The accident occurred a day after a 20-year-old woman, riding pillion on a bike, was killed after a bus hit the two-wheeler on Howrah bridge around 8pm.

At least 40 pedestrians and motorcyclists who were on the bridge on Monday night blocked the road to protest the accident.

Both vehicles were seized on the spot but the driver of the CRPF vehicle fled, the police said.

The blockade was lifted around 11.15pm.

A case has been started against the driver of the CRPF vehicle for causing death by negligence, rash and negligent driving and mischief.

The BT Road accident occurred around 11pm near the Radha Krishna temple in Cossipore when Vishal Kohli, 34, rammed into a vehicle. He was not wearing a helmet, the police said.

Kohli was declared dead at RG Kar hospital.
