The 54-year-old businessman who was suspected to have fallen to his death from a Tollygunge high-rise on Friday possibly had an accidental fall, police said on Saturday.

Pramod Jalan, 54, who was found lying behind Tower IV of Diamond City South along MG Road, fell while trying to lean over to check if the fruit seller who came daily had arrived, according to preliminary investigations.

“Jalan who lived with his family in a flat on the eighth floor had told his wife that he was stepping out to fetch some fruits from a vendor who sits on the ground floor,” an officer of Haridevpur police station said.

“He walked to the emergency fire landing to possibly look down to check if the vendor had arrived when he fell. The vendor had not turned up on Friday.”

Jalan had landed below the emergency fire landing. “Had he jumped, he would have landed some distance away,” a forensic official said.

The police said these were early findings. “These are possibilities and we are yet to reach a conclusion. The preliminary post-mortem report has suggested it was either an accidental or a suicidal fall. But circumstantial and forensic findings point towards an accidental fall,” the officer said.

“The balcony on his floor leads to the emergency fire landing. The door leading to the landing is usually kept open. We have learnt that Jalan had gone to the balcony.”
