Kohima, Feb. 5: A daylong workshop on e-governance organised by the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Kohima, was held today on the Meriema campus of the institute.

Addressing the participants in the workshop, Nagaland chief secretary Banuo Z. Jamir emphasised that e-governance was part of good governance and said technology had tremendously changed life.

The chief secretary, who was the chief guest at the inaugural function, said she was happy to attend the workshop.

She said a paradigm shift in governance system from the conventional one to that of e-governance would facilitate many things and bring about a more efficient, effective, relevant delivery mechanism.

Jamir said through the use of technology, the government could develop a database that could be commonly shared by all departments.

“Delay in gathering information and data will also be addressed and cut down on time and costs,” she said.

Stating that the departments were unwilling to share information, the chief secretary said through the proper use of technology such anomalies would be done away.

She said the availability of information would also take care of the difficulty of disseminating government programmes and policies.

So far, e-governance programmes have been launched in some selected departments, like the district administration in issuing inner line permits, payment of taxes and depositing funds to beneficiaries.

The commissioner and secretary, information technology and communication, K.D. Vizo, said e-governance was meant to improve government decision-making, increase accountability and promote faster flow of information to citizens.
