Silchar: Cachar district administration, on Friday, clamped Section 144 CrPC at Kalibari Char and few other adjoining areas in Silchar following repeated scuffles in the areas for the last few days.

A notice was issued by Cachar deputy commissioner and district magistrate S. Lakshmanan on Friday morning.

Sources said the first incident, which took place at Kalibari Char late on Sunday and continued for hours, left at least 10 persons injured. A number of shops and houses were damaged.

The notice issued by Lakshmanan said an assembly of more than five persons was forbidden in public places in Kalibari Char and other areas including Madhurbond, Water Works Road and Bhuiyagadi.

The notice will be in effect till further orders.

Sources said the latest incident of violence occurred late on Thursday after some youths pelted stones at Shutkipatty here in which a few houses were damaged and some people got injured.

This resulted in disturbances at Kalibari Char and Madhurbond as a large number of people came out on the streets after rumours started doing the rounds that stones were being pelted at a mosque near the area, sources said.

Security officials rushed to the spot following which the mob pelted stones. Eventually, police resorted to baton-charge and fired teargas shells to disperse the mob. Three to four policemen and some local people were injured, sources said.

Cachar superintendent of police Rakesh Roushan told The Telegraph on Friday that 15 persons had been arrested in connection with Thursday night's incident.

They were produced before a court here today and sent to judicial custody, he said.

He said the situation in the areas was normal and security officials have been deployed in large numbers to prevent further incidents.

Cachar police, on its Facebook page and through other platforms, gave a word of caution on Thursday to citizens to not post false news or any unwanted message or pictures on social media. It also made it clear that stern action would be taken against those found flouting the directive.
