A source said a police team from Assam was in Delhi and Sharjeel, a JNU research scholar, was being interrogated by Delhi police and their Assam counterparts.

Another source said the Assam police team, led by Nabaneet Mahanta, will appeal for his custody on Friday.

Guwahati police commissioner Munna Prasad Gupta said the police team was expected to take Sharjeel into custody after his remand period with Delhi police ends.

Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur police have also registered cases against Sharjeel for alleged inflammatory speeches. In a video, which was widely shared, Sharjeel purportedly said, “We can cut the Northeast from India permanently. If not permanently, then for at least for one-two months. Only when Assam is cut off from India, they (the government) will listen to us.”

Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu had earlier tweeted: “This kind of provocation inciting secession of Assam and other NE states from rest of India, creating communal disharmony, hampering sovereignty and territorial Integrity of India will not be tolerated.”

Manipur police also registered a case under Sections 121, 121A, 124A, 120B and 153 of the IPC.
