Imphal, July 14: Buckling under pressure from the Manipur University Teachers’ Association (Muta), vice-chancellor Ch. Amuba Singh has set up a two-member panel to inquire into the Rs 8.08-lakh fake purchase scam.
The union threatened to launch an agitation if Singh fails to initiate an independent inquiry. The independent pan-el, constituted on Thursday, comprises former director of education Elangbam Yaima Singh and former member of the Manipur Public Service Commission Khuraijam Dhi-ren and has been asked to submit a report within a month.
The scam involves purchase of goods for the departments of biotechnology, life science, chemistry and computer science without making actual payments.
Singh yesterday issued a circular informing the Muta and all departmental heads of his recent step.
G. Jiten Sharma of the biotechnology department, Shantibala Devi of the life science department, Rajmohon Singh of the chemistry department and Tejmani Singh of the computer science department tendered their resignations as heads of their respective departments on Monday and reaffirmed their decision the next day.
They refused to accept the notification maintaining that they no longer held the posts. They alleged that they had been falsely implicated in the scam by the university authorities.
