Dhubri, June 27: The Dhubri unit of the All-Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union (AKRSU) threatened to launch an agitation if the settlers along the National Highway 31 reserve and government khas land in different areas of the district are not evicted immediately.

Flood and erosion-affected people of Dhubri and neighbouring districts have constructed temporary shelters and have been living without having any government sanction in these areas.

These illegal encroachers will create problems for the district, which is one of the densely populated districts of Assam, the students’ union alleged.

It also alleged that the encroachers have been setting up camps at Chapor, Bilasipara, Bogribari, Mancachar, south Salmara, Golokganj and Agomoni revenue circles of Dhubri district for quite a long time now, without any action from the district administration.

“At present, large tracts of khas land and reserved land along the national highway are being encroached upon by these settlers. These settlers, particularly under the Golokganj and Agomoni revenue circles, might never vacate the land,” the president of the district unit of the union, Kartik Roy, said.

Roy said new settlers often encroached upon government land and then produced fake documents of ownership. They then get their names entered into the voter list.

The union demanded appropriate action in all the revenue circles of Dhubri district, particularly in West Kanuri-Part III, West Kanuri-Part II, West Moisa Part-I, Belguri, West Ratiadoh and its surrounding areas.

Golokganj revenue circle officer Sabyasachi Kashyap, who is also in charge of Agomoni revenue circle, said he had received complaints about the encroachment.

“ I will inquire into this soon and appropriate action will be taken against new settlers according to the land and revenue law of the government,” Kashyap said.

The students’ union also submitted a memorandum to the state secretary of land and revenue and the Dhubri deputy commissioner recently.
