Bhubaneswar, March 1: Entry of a foreign national into the premises of Puri’s Jagannath temple today created a flutter among the priests and devotees. Under the rules, only those born as Hindus are allowed inside the shrine.

Talking to The Telegraph over phone, chief administrator S.C. Mohapatra said a US national, identified as Paul F. Roedigerg, was detected inside the temple in the afternoon. The man was taken to Town police station and later released after it was confirmed that he entered the temple without having any knowledge of the rules.

“We would go through the footage of the CCTV installed in the temple to find out who had brought him inside,” said Mohapatra. There was a possibility that Roedigerg could not be detected at the entrance as he “looked” like an Indian, said a temple official.

A.K. Pahi, the inspector in-charge of Town police station, said: “The 60-year-old entered the temple out of curiosity.”
