Jamshedpur, April 23: Tridibesh Mukherjee, the Tata Steel group director of integration and development, is set to join an elite club that includes JRD Tata. For, he would be awarded the 2008 Bessemer Gold Medal by Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IMMM), UK, on July 2 in London for his contribution to the steel industry.
IMMM promotes and develops all aspects of materials science, engineering, geology, mining and associated technologies, mineral and petroleum engineering and extraction metallurgy.
Mukherjee, who was the former deputy managing director (steel) of Tata Steel, would deliver the Bessemer lecture after receiving the award.
“Among the awards which recognise the achievements of people in the steel industry, Bessemer Gold Medal is the most prestigious and is given to acknowledge outstanding contributions of a person to the steel industry,” said a Tata Steel spokesperson.
Mukherjee could not be contacted for his comments.
Mukherjee joined Tata Steel in 1971 and rose to the position of deputy managing director (steel). During his four-decade-long tenure with Tata Steel, Mukherjee has been conferred various awards like the Metallurgist of the Year Award in 1975, the Vasvik Award, the Bhoruka Gold Medal, the Visvesvaraya Gold Medal, the Tata Gold Medal (1996) and the IIM Platinum Medal.
In 2000, Mukherjee received the prestigious National Metallurgist Award, awarded by the Union ministry of steel.
