Coal town recce before PM visit

A team comprising state government officials and police arrived in the coal town on Wednesday to take stock of preparations ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposed visit on May 25 to attend the maiden IIT(ISM) convocation as the chief guest and lay the foundation of a fertiliser plant in Sindri.

Dhanbad: A team comprising state government officials and police arrived in the coal town on Wednesday to take stock of preparations ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposed visit on May 25 to attend the maiden IIT(ISM) convocation as the chief guest and lay the foundation of a fertiliser plant in Sindri.

The team, led by chief secretary Sudhir Tripathy and comprising DGP D.K. Pandey and home secretary S.K.G. Rahate, arrived at Barwaddah air strip from Ranchi around 11am and later moved to Golf Ground, one of proposed sites for the foundation stone laying ceremony of the fertiliser factory of Hindustan Urvarak and Rasayan Ltd (HURL).

Tripathi along with other officials of the state and central governments later reached the IIT(ISM) campus where he first inspected the newly developed eight-storey library in the presence of director Rajiv Shekhar and registrar retired Colonel M.K. Singh and later visited Penman Auditorium where 38th and 39th convocation of IIT(ISM) is scheduled.

Modi will also inaugurate a library and an eight-storey 1,000-bed girls' hostel on the premises of the tech institute.

The team later did a recce of the Baliapur-based air strip, another proposed site for laying the foundation of the factory.

In a brief interaction with the media at Barwaddah, Tripathi said, "The PM's office has not yet confirmed his visit."

Being set up by HURL, a joint venture of National Thermal Power Corporation, Indian Oil Company, Coal India and Fertilizer Corporation of India, the plant at Sindri is likely to be commissioned by the end of 2020.

The project will comprise of a 2,200-tonne-per-day capacity ammonia plant, besides a 3,850-tonne-per-day urea plant and a 20-30MW power plant.
