Power dues reminder on phone

To increase revenue, Patna Electric Supply Undertaking (Pesu) would make phone calls to remind consumers who owe an outstanding bill.

Pesu has asked its four lakh consumers to furnish their phone numbers, along with their consumer ID numbers for the purpose.

“We will soon start a mechanism under which our employees would make phone calls to the consumers, who owe an outstanding bill of even a month. The plan is being implemented with a view to remind consumers to pay their outstanding bills, including arrears. We hope to increase revenue collection with this effort,” a Pesu officer said.

If the consumers do not pay heed to phone call warnings and alerts, their power connection would be snapped, sources said. Initially, making phone call to a consumer would be a manual exercise, where a Pesu employee would do the job. The system would be computerised later. Pesu would ask the consumers to furnish their phone numbers, along with the consumer IDs, in the register kept at the collection counters at the time of depositing the electricity bills.

The power company, which has been making frantic efforts to increase its collections, has taken umpteen steps in the past two years to make things easier for consumers for paying bills. Now, standing in long queues for hours to deposit the bill has become a thing of the past.

The steps taken by the Discom to facilitate easy bill payment included, 2,000 branches of regional rural banks, through mobile phones, online, Any Time Payment machines, increased number of collection counters and others.

The measures have yielded results to the distribution companies whose coffers have swelled in past one year.

Making a presentation on November 1 on the occasion of the first anniversary function of Bihar State Power (Holding) Company Ltd and its four subsidiary companies, North Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd and South Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd managing director Sanjay Kumar Agarwal said the revenue collection of the Discom has increased to Rs 360 crore in September 2013 from Rs 239 crore in September 2012.

The company has set a revenue target of Rs 450 crore by the end of the current fiscal.

Exhorting the employees of the power companies to work hard for increasing the collection, chief secretary Ashok Kumar Sinha, speaking on the second day of the same function, had said a power company needs to collect Rs 140 for supplying power worth Rs 100 to make it sustainable.
