Vivek Singh passes away

Varanasi: Former hockey international Vivek Singh passed away at his residence on Wednesday after a prolonged battle with cancer, family sources said.

Singh, 37, was first diagnosed or urinary bladder cancer in 2000 but the doctors last year detected that the disease had spread to other parts of his body including the lungs.

An employee of the north eastern Railway, Singh played 200 internationals for the country and represented India in the Seoul Olympics in 1988, Champions Trophy in Germany in 1989, Lahore World Cup and the Beijing Asian Games in 1990.

He is survived by wife and two daughters.
