London: Fenerbahce have confirmed that Turkish international midfielder Mehmet Topal was shot at while in his car during an armed attack.
The 29-year-old was travelling home from training when shots were fired, with the club calling the incident a "terrorist act".
A statement released by Fenerbahce said: "Our player Mehmet Topal's car was shot at when the player was inside the car. "After the morning training, our player''s car was attacked by an unidentified person when he was going to his home.
"Our player was not injured by this attack because his car had bulletproof glass. "This attack is an armed terrorist act. We condemn these attacks and hope the perpetrators are found and justice is done."
A picture published of his car's windscreen appears to show bullet damage, but that the shell had not penetrated the window. The club confirmed that Topal had bullet-proof protection on the vehicle. Several shots were fired at the car before Topal pulled over to the side of the road and alerted the police.
Uygar Mert Zeybek, a 20-year-old Fenerbahce player, was also in the car with Topal and was unharmed. The reason for the attack is unclear, but Fenerbahce's team bus was shot at earlier this year and the driver was wounded in the city of Trabzon.
The bus had been driving over a viaduct and a club official was forced to intervene to bring the vehicle to a halt.
The club said at the time that the attack represented the "peak point of hostility" towards it.
Turkey's top-flight Super League was suspended for a week and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, seen as a Fenerbahce supporter, called a meeting of the league's 18 club captains. (Agencies)
