Alzarri Joseph celebrates after dismissing a Pakistan batsman at the Kensington Oval on Thursday

Calcutta/Bridgetown: Shannon Gabriel took five wickets in a hostile spell as a Pakistan line-up consisting of Azhar Ali, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq and Babar Azam were bundled out for a nothing 81 on the final day as West Indies won the second Test by 106 runs at the Kensington Oval.

It was at this very ground two decades ago when the likes of Curtly Ambrose and Ian Bishop had bowled the Sachin Tendulkar-led India out for a similar fourth-innings total, leading the West Indies to an unlikely victory.

Twenty years later, the West Indies, an immensely weakened side especially in the longest format, put up an inspiring show to decimate Pakistan and level the series 1-1 against all odds.

Earlier in the morning session on Thursday, West Indies added just four more to their overnight total to be all out for 268 in their second essay. Yasir Shah took seven wickets for Pakistan as they had to get 188 in over two sessions.

There were cracks on the final day wicket, but chasing 180-odd runs was never quite impossible. But West Indies pacers were absolutely spot-on with their line and length, and together with Pakistan batsmen's lack of application, the hosts sealed the Test in a little while after lunch.

Apart from Gabriel, captain Jason Holder struck thrice while young Alzarri Joseph also took a couple of wickets to leave Pakistan devastated. On a fifth day wicket, spinner Devendra Bishoo wasn't required to bowl even an over.

"It was obviously a very good game for us... It was a team effort," Holder said at the post-match presentation.

"We got first-innings runs and were able to back it up with the ball. Shai Hope played a very good innings. Once we gave them anything in excess of 170 to chase down, it was always going to be a very good chance on a Day V pitch.

"Using cutters and cross-seam deliveries was going to give us help on this pitch."

For Gabriel, this victory really meant a lot. "It really means a lot to the team and I thank the Almighty for making this possible," Gabriel, adjudged Man of the Match, said.

"I think it was a complete team effort. I was trying too hard and trying to bowl too fast, so I just made a decision to stay calm in the second innings. The ball did reverse a bit, but I still had to put the ball in the right areas.

"It was an up-and-down fifth-day pitch, so we knew that all we had to do was put the ball in the right areas."

Holder, however, didn't forget to make a special mention regarding Shai Hope's 90 that brought West Indies back in the game. "Hope's innings was outstanding. He has two double-centuries here in first-class cricket.

"Unfortunately, he did not score a hundred, but he deserved it... It was an important win, as we needed to keep the series alive.

"I just asked the guys to focus on the important things. It was important for us to show consistency and we were able to do that here," Holder emphasised.

Pakistan skipper Misbah was, no doubt, disappointed after his team squandered a good opportunity to seal the series at Barbados itself. "We all know from the first day that the pitch was going to get worse. I think we should have got a bigger first-innings lead.<>"And finally, on the last day, West Indies bowled their heart out and we were left with no answers. Initially, they gave us few balls to score off, but we were never trying to go negative or defensive. And we know that on the final day after the new ball wears out, scoring would be difficult.

"But we lost our key batsmen very early and it was difficult after that. I think because of the height of their fast bowlers. It was a tailor-made pitch for them to keep hitting the deck hard and make the ball jump around," Misbah said."
