Indians move up in Germany

New Delhi: Indian shuttlers Chetan Anand, Arvind Bhat and Anand Pawar advanced to the second round of men’s singles event at Bitburger Open badminton meet in Germany Wednesday.
Top seed Chetan didn’t have to break any sweat as his local rival Lukas Schmidt retired at 4-2, while fourth seed Arvind beat German Gregory Schneider 21-12, 21-13.

Bopanna out

Kuala Lumpur: Rohan Bopanna and his Pakistani partner Aisam-ul Haq Qureshi go down to the Russian-Czech pair of Igor Kunitsyn and Jaroslav Levinsky 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 11-13 in the men’s doubles quarterfinals of Malaysian Open tennis meet Wednesday.

Talukdar 4th

Calcutta: Jayanta Talukdar, has returned empty-handed after a below-par performance in the men’s recurve section of the final-leg Archery World Cup. The top seeded Indian archer had some hope in the bronze medal play-off but lost to Romain Girouille of France by a slender margin of three arrows (113-110) to finish fourth.

Bolt records

Monaco: Usain Bolt’s 100 and 200 metres world records have been ratified by the International Association of Athletics Federations. Both marks were set at the World Championships in Berlin in August. The IAAF also ratified Poland’s Anita Wlodarczyk’s world record hammer throw of 77.96 metres.

Hall of Fame

Calcutta: Wasim Akram and former Australian skipper Steve Waugh were Wednesday inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame along with three others. Herbert Sutcliffe, Clarrie Grimmett and Victor Trumper, are the other three who were added.

O’Brien in

Calcutta: The International Cricket Council’s event technical committee of the ongoing Champions Trophy Wednesday gave New Zealand the go ahead to replace an injured Daryl Tuffey with Iain O’Brien.

Replacement

Calcutta: Yuvraj Singh, who is nursing a hand injury, was Wednesday replaced by Ameya Shrikhande in the India Red squad for the Challenger Trophy scheduled from October 8 to 11 in Nagpur. Yuvraj was supposed to captain the side.

Appointments

Calcutta: Jawagal Srinath and Sri Lanka’s Roshan Mahanama will be joined by Srinivas Venkatraghavanto complete the Match Referees’ line-up for the Champions League T20 from October 8-23. Among umpires, India’s Amish Saheba and Shavir Tarapore from ICC’s onfield international panel are in the nine-member team that would do duty in the meet along with compatriot Sanjay Hazare.
