Calcutta/Hyderabad: Experienced Bangladesh cricketer Shakib-al Hasan on Sunday said that they would like to put their best foot forward in the upcoming one-off Test against the world No.1 Test side, India.
"Playing a Test in India for the first time is in itself exciting. We know it is not easy and India are No.1 at the moment. It will be difficult for us, but that is why we play cricket, face the challenge and do well," the all-rounder told reporters on the sidelines of a two-day warm-up game against India A.
The Test will be played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket stadium here from February 9.
Shakib will play a key role for Bangladesh simply because he is an integral part of both the batting and bowling departments. The all-rounder believes everyone has to chip in to get the better of a strong side like India.
"It is a challenge for everyone," Shakib was quoted as saying ESPNcricinfo.
"Say, you score 250 runs and your bowlers do well, then 250 runs is a lot of runs. But then you score 500 runs, but your bowlers give away that many runs. So the team can perform well only when everyone contributes. The team cannot win depending on one particular department. In New Zealand, it so happened that one day we batted well and the other day we bowled well - but there was no joint contribution."
"Everyone has a contribution in it, even those who were new. The responsibility is everyone's," he stressed.
Speaking about Ravichandran Ashwin, the man who will lead the Indian bowling attack, Shakib said there would be no competition between the two spinners.
"There is no competition. I do not think of it that way nor does he. In fact I think no one thinks of it that way. He is doing well from his place and I am trying to do well at my end. The better I do the more help the team gets. The importance of a player differs from team to team. I will be happy if I get to contribute for my team in the role I am in.
"He [Ashwin] has been bowling really well for India for the last 2-3 years. The control makes him different. He does whatever he wants to do with the ball. If you can do that, you don't need to do anything else as a bowler. His control and the confidence makes him the No. 1 bowler at the moment," Shakib said.
Shakib conceded that the biggest challenge was to contain the India batsmen. "You also need to think that they play spin well. I think they are the best in playing against spin, so it will be a big challenge for us. If we can do well here it will boost our confidence for the Sri Lanka series."
On the first day of the warm-up tie, India A emerged as the dominant side as they raced to 91 for one after Bangladesh declared their innings at 224 for eight.
Batting first after winning the toss, only two Bangladeshi batsmen - captain Mushfiqur Rahim and Soumya Sarkar - had decent batting practice. While Mushfiqur made 58 off 106 balls, Sarkar struck 52 off 73 at the Gymkhana Ground.
