Calcutta/Johannesburg: South Africa President Jacob Zuma and sportspersons across disciplines have expressed shock at the death of South Africa football captain Senzo Meyiwa.
Here’s what some of them (alphabetically) had to say:
Hashim Amla (SA Test captain): We send our deep-hearted condolences to his family and loved ones... Let’s also take this time to appreciate Senzo’s young life and achievements, he made a big impact for Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates at an early age and should be remembered for that.
Kevin-Prince Boateng (Ghana international, Twitter): TRAGEDY!!!! R.I.P. Senzo Meyiwa. My condolences to his family&friends.
Haroon Lorgat (CSA chief executive): Senzo has been an inspirational leader both of the national soccer team and of Orlando Pirates. On behalf of the CSA family I extend our deepest condolences to the many people who have been deeply affected by this double tragedy.
Shakes Mashaba (SA national football manager): Don’t think such a good man as Senzo can go and vanish. His spirit will live on. He would always be the leader.
Vernon Philander (SA cricketer, Twitter): My thoughts and prayers goes out the family of Senzo. May you find the comfort in the Lord during this difficult time. RIP.
AB de Villiers (SA ODI captain): I didn’t know Senzo personally but our team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee, knew him reasonably well and speaks fondly of his astute professionalism and talent.
Jacob Zuma (SA President): Words cannot express the nation’s shock at this loss. We mourn the death of this young footballer and team leader whose life has been taken away at the prime of his career. The law enforcement authorities must leave no stone unturned in finding his killers.
