Mumbai/Melbourne: Corruption allegations made by controversial agent Mazhar Majeed have rocked the world cricket.
While some have called for tighter vigilance to keep the game clean, most have rubbished Majeed’s claims.
The recording of Majeed’s conversation with an undercover journalist were played to a jury and the judge at Southwark Crown Court, in London, as part of the ongoing spot-fixing trial. Majeed claimed on Monday that the Australians were the biggest culprits.
Former South Africa player Jonty Rhodes wants the International Cricket Council (ICC) to make “every effort” to keep cricket corruption free.
While former Australia medium pacer Nathan Bracken’s manager called Majeed’s claims to be a “load of garbage”, Moin Khan, a former Pakistan skipper, denied having any links with the alleged agent.
Here’s what some of them (alphabetically) had to say:
James Henderson (Ricky Ponting’s manager): We have never heard of him.
Rob Horton (Nathan Bracken’s manager): What a load of garbage… We have never heard of this guy. We have never met him. Nathan would never ever be involved in anything like that at all. He’s thinking of taking legal action in London to protect his reputation.
Moin Khan: I can’t say much at this stage because the matter is subjudice, but I have never met or seen Mazhar Majeed in my life and I only came to know about him after the spot-fixing scandal broke out last year in England… So, I am surprised that he is taking names including that of mine. It is amazing...
Jonty Rhodes: Hansie Cronje was my colleague and we had no idea he was doing something like that. The ICC has put the mechanism in place… I’m sure ICC is doing enough and should make every effort to keep this game clean.
