Luis nets winner

Madrid: Barcelona got their bid for a sixth La Liga title in eight years off to a winning start when Luis Suarez buried a fine volley shortly after halftime to secure a hard-fought 1-0 win at Athletic Bilbao on Sunday. Lionel Messi missed a first-half penalty. It was also sweet revenge for Barca following their 1-5 aggregate defeat to Bilbao in Spanish Super Cup.

Calcutta: Anirban Ghosh and Mousumi Paul emerged winners of the WBTTA Kalyan Jayant Memorial Table Tennis Championships, in Barrackpore, on Sunday. In the men's final, Anirban won 4-1 over Arjun Ghosh. Mousumi too won by an identical margin over Anindita Chakraborty in the final.

Advani view

New Delhi: Amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, ace cueist Pankaj Advani believes politics should not be mixed with sport and Indo-Pak sporting ties should go on. "I don't think sport and politics really need to be mixed. When we talk about sport, we talk about cutting across barriers," Advani said.

Bernie plan

Spa-Francorchamps: The Russian Grand Prix could become a night race as early as 2017, according to Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone and organisers. "We've talked about it. Maybe in 2017 - so you know you can book your tickets for the next 10 years," Ecclestone said.
