Calcutta/Colombo: Sri Lanka Cricket Monday announced the suspension of Jayananda Warnaweera, a former national cricketer who was the chief curator of the Galle ground, for dodging ICC match-fixing investigation.

SLC said that Warnaweera has been suspended for two years from taking part in cricket, management and representation.

Warnaweera was also a member of the current interim committee governing the SLC until he was suspended last month for failing to cooperate with an ICC anti-corruption probe. Warnaweera, a former Test medium pacer in the early 90s, headed the southern sea side stadium of Galle as its curator.

He was accused of sharing pitch information in an ICC anti-corruption probe.

A cricket specific website revealed that precisely, Warnaweera had failed to attend two interviews with the ICC's anti-corruption unit. It added that Warnaweera himself is likely to be the subject of the investigation.

Warnaweera's failure to respond to SLC's show-cause notice prompted the suspension, though the Lankan Board had already unofficially asked him to step back from his post as the curator of Galle, in October.

"Following disciplinary proceedings taken by Sri Lanka Cricket arising from charges that Mr. Jayananda Warnaweera failed to attend two interviews scheduled to be held by the Anti-Corruption Unit of the ICC, and failed to cooperate with and assist the investigation being carried out by the Anti-Corruption Unit and related charges of misconduct, the Interim Committee of SLC has suspended Mr. Warnaweera from cricket, cricket management and representation for a period of two years," a SLC statement said.

Specific details of the ICC investigation are unavailable, but the apex body, the website reported, has already built a substantial case against Warnaweera based on his financial records and alleged contact with bookmakers.
