Calcutta: After six editions that generated lukewarm interest from fans, the Champions League T20 has been discontinued. The tournament’s governing council, comprising representatives of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Cricket South Africa (CSA) and Cricket Australia (CA), made the decision unanimously on Wednesday.
According to a BCCI release, the governing council determined that the discontinuation was “the most appropriate decision due to the tournament’s limited public following”.
The council had been considering scrapping the competition for sometime and mulling different alternative options.
The decision comes just a day after the Supreme Court appointed Justice Lodha Committee gave a stinging verdict.
Meanwhile, Sunil Gavaskar rubbished talks of IPL being the reason behind the scrapping.
“There is no connection. I think it's completely different. The Champions League has four teams from the IPL. I don’t think anything to do with the IPL would have had an effect on the CLT20,” he told a news channel.
