The points system for the World Test Championship will be amended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following disruption in the schedule owing to the pandemic. As per the new rules, teams will be ranked in order of percentage of points earned.

The ICC board approved a recommendation from its cricket committee, headed by Anil Kumble, to change the terms for the event.

This latest tweak in the points system will not benefit Team India as they slipped from the top position to second place in the championship table.

Australia (296 points from 3 series) toppled India (360 points from 4 series) in the standings after the revision with a percentage of 82.22 compared to the latter’s 75 per cent.

The 0-2 loss in New Zealand seems to have hurt India’s chances and the home series against England next year will be crucial to their hopes of a final berth.

Current regulations dictate that matches not completed shall be treated as a draw with points split.

The cricket committee considered maintaining that status quo or determining the final World Test Championship League standings from matches played.

The cricket committee recommended the latter option, which was approved by the chief executives committee and ratified by the board, meaning teams will be ranked in order of percentage of points earned.

The board also confirmed the introduction of minimum age requirement for international cricket to 15 years.
