New Delhi: Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir on Monday played down his altercation with Mahela Jayawardene in the field as a minor one, but at the same time maintained that likes to play aggressive cricket.
At the post-match presentation ceremony, Gambhir, who is from Delhi, declared that he is a “Calcutta boy” now and that the Eden is his home ground.
The following are excerpts
If this win was special
For me, every game is important. Whenever, we go out to play, I would like to win. For that, if I have to be aggressive, then I will be. Like all other matches, this, too, was a hugely important match for us. I am a Calcutta boy now and Eden Gardens is my home ground. Kotla is perhaps where I spent most of my time, but my heart belongs to the Eden. But it’s always nice to come back to my hometown.
Whether he was aggressive on the field
Yes, I think aggressive cricket is very important. It is the responsibility of batsmen like me and Brendon McCullum or Yusuf Pathan to bat aggressively and do the scoring. It is our natural style.
On Virender Sehwag
I have the utmost respect for Viru. He is a very dear friend. He is a tremendous cricketer.
The Knights’ prospect in IPL-V
There is still a long way to go… The best thing is the kind of quality we have in the dressing room… Players like Jacques Kallis, who is a legend of the game. If we keep playing the way we have been playing, the results will continue to be in our favour. We didn’t do very well in the first three years. We did pretty well last year… But then, it is not about doing well for a year. It is about carrying on the good work and carrying on the momentum.
The altercation he had with Mahela Jayawardene
Well, nothing serious happened with Mahela, it was a minor issue. We just spoke a few words with each other...
On Sunil Narine
Well, Sunil took two wickets, but it is not just about him. He only bowled four overs and that alone did not make all the impact in the match. All our bowlers have bowled well — Brett Lee and Rajat Bhatia have been bowling consistently well. Kallis, too, captured two wickets. They were the unsung heroes. One should talk about them also.
On Brendon McCullum getting back to form
McCullum was always in good form… In India, it is like if you make a 50, you are in a good form… But what is important is that how well you are hitting the ball and McCullum was doing that. We were involved in a century partnership against the Pune Warriors in our last match.
His own form
I don’t think we are winning the matches just because of my effort... I am in good form but I think the other players are also contributing to the winning cause. I believe that the batsmen need to put in a bit more effort. We are peaking at the right time… We should look to improve more.
If he is ever tense
I am the most tensed and nervous guy in the dugout. I have certain things to do to relax the tension. At times, I play PlayStation to relax.
On Shah Rukh Khan, the principal owner
Shah Rukh doesn’t interfere a lot... The guys are self-motivated. I believe that if you are not motivated while playing for KKR, you don’t deserve to sit in the dressing room.
