Trainer Vijay Singh’s champion performer, Black Pearl (Suraj Narredu-up) kept his date at the Calcutta Derby Stakes on Sunday. However, Vijay may not have liked the way the prestigious event fell into his lap. The four-horse Derby field was reduced to two as the fillies’ pair of Zoya (Trevor Patel) and Apsara Star (Y.S. Srinath) unseated their riders nearing the 1,000m marker, leaving the 2/10 piping hot favourite, Black Pearl, to win the winner’s purse of about Rs 30 lakh.
Zoya had to be destroyed as The Calcutta Oaks winner broke her right-fore cannon bone during the running of the 2,400m race.
